Chiropractic Care for Back Pain
Back pain is the most common reason that patients go to see the chiropractor. Chiropractic is the second largest of the three health care systems in the United States and is the most frequently used form of alternative health care in the country. In other words, chiropractors are very effective in treating back pain. The causes of back pain are numerous and are often difficult to narrow down to one common cause. The back is a complex system of crossing muscles, joints, discs, nerves, and vessels. Back pain can originate from muscle tears and spasms, pinched nerves, disc bulges and herniations, and imbalances in the spine. Chiropractors focus on these parts of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems in order to find the underlying cause of the problem and fix it. Using orthopedic tests, neurological tests, range of motion assessments, posture and gait analysis, palpation, and x-rays, chiropractors identify small misalignments in the spine and skeleton called “subluxations”. These misalignments shift stress around our body and alter our normal biomechanics, causing pain. These misalignments can cause muscles to tighten and our posture to change, making us lean to one side, walk differently, or even develop curves in our spine. These misalignments can put pressure on nerves and cause arm and leg pain, or make it hard for us to bend at the waist or turn our heads. Chiropractors correct these misalignment using gentle chiropractic adjustments to realign the skeleton as well as stretches and exercises to loosen tight muscles and strengthen weak ones. Chiropractic works to fix the cause of the problem instead of covering up the pain with an aspirin.
